Ebay here we come, this will save time and materials ?

As mentioned the new addition (the rabbit) needs a home and has taken priority over the chicken coop !!
I headed to ebay for the rabbit hutch to save me time and effort and so we could get the rabbit into his home as soon as possible
There is many types of hutches on ebay for rabbits and other various furry creatures
I wrote down the dimensions and then tried to work out where it should go, but the decision was made it should go near where the kids play!!
And you guessed it none of the ebays hutches will fit into the area so here we go again time to build a rabbit hutch

A small fluffy project puts the chicken coop on hold for a week

The wife and kids normally have an impact on what gets done around the house, but this week more than normal.
The family was off to pick up a family member friend from the airport and as expected the flight was delayed significantly. so instead of paying the large parking fees we decided to go to the local shopping center instead , in hindsight we should have stayed at the airport.
On entering the kids found a pet store and as always we went in to take a look at the fish, puppies and all the other cute cuddly furry critters
But this time there was a difference the rabbits attracted the kids attention and my wifes, one in particular and i thought Oh no what is going to happen here

So with some quick thinking i diverted the attention of the family from the rabbit to food court for some donughts !! but not good enough, we now have a cute pet rabbit that needs a home built.
Luckily we have owned a rabbit before we had the kids so there isn’t as much research needed to get a hutch

So out with the chicken coop plans and in with the rather urgent need to buld a rabbit hutch and fast.

We set up a temporary home in the laundry while i get into action

Some of my mates have all laughed at my dilemma of having to build a chicken house/ coop, a few of them have realised it isn’t such a bad idea and are coming around to the idea of lots of eggs to eat. one guy even started recalling all the food receipes he could think of the eat. I came home from work day the other to find a bunch of timber in the front yard !! What the .. i thought builders dumping stuff on my lawn when there is a building site next door with a skip, i then realised my mate had dropped off the timber for me to use to house the chickens, i think the comment was you owe me some eggs, the chicken revolution is here !!!

Checking out some mates chicken coop set ups

Over the last week i have decided to looka t a few mates who have chciken coops set up so see how they house their chickens.
First stop was a few days ago i went to see a friend who lives on 5 acres, driving int he drive way there was chickens walking everywhere, for theirs they have built a lean to ont he side of their shed it is huge, actually huge is an understatement, it houses 20+ isa browns and a few bantams but it is a bit big for my liking, a great setup but just that bit to big. it was a basic set up colour bond roof with a few nesting boxes bolted on the back of it.
Yesterday i went to a mates house to see his his chook house set up, the kids were running around not realising the had chickens until one jumped down off the picket fence and scarred the kids. they are now back on the we want chicken campaign so i really have to get my act into gear now
They have a metal shed type at oen end of the yard but they also had one of the new ebay ones at the other end, it was their newest editon to the back yard. I looked it over to see how the ebay one stands up, it was ok but the biggest issue was the size it was pretty small and thats what the ebay sellers recommend for 4 chooks, i would have only put 1 chicken in there or maybe 2 bantams it was pretty small.

So now that i have worked out the ebay ones arent going to suit its back to researching the best way to house the chickens so i can build a chicken coop

Where is building chicken coop up to ?

I have been busy so i haven’t been able to spend as much time looking at building the chicken coop as i would have liked. But in saying that i visited the mother in laws the other day and picked up two sheets of roofing for the chicken coop, i searched the rest of the nocks and crannies for any more materials that i could use. Unfortunately at this stage all i can rind is the roofing for the hen house.

But working on the plans is a bit of an issue working out what i can fit best way to make it so that it is functional, easy to clean and comfortable for the chickens but most important of all i need to make sure the kids can get in there and enjoy them after all thats why we are doing it (oh and for the eggs for breakfast lunch and dinner :-) )

I have been doing some more searching of the internt to see what i can find so i can build the best of breed chicken hutch, or at least something im happy to look at. I will keep you posted what i find
Happy chicken hutch building

Gathering materials for building the chicken coop

The chicken coop is going to be made soon. So while i am messign around with ideas and plans and ways of building the coop i have started to keep my eye open for any materials i think i might need.

I have managed to source some colourbond roofing, i just saw it at the mother in laws so no mater what design i have it will need a roof so as i work out measurments and materials in the back of my mind i am workign out where to source the materials so that i can get this build on a low budget and keep the costs down where possible. And i just drove past the rural supplies store and they even have a sign out the front of the shed so i get to see it every day, day old chickens and they have become 1 week old chickens so my time is getting near, time to get building.

So remember if you are thinking abut building a chicken coop start thinking about the materials you will need and where you can source/scam or obtain them

What chicken is best or kids?

So now the chicken decission has been made while i look for coop plans and ideas  I needed to work out where to buy some chooks and then which chicken is best for kids?

I didn’t realise there was so many types of chickens to choose from there is Australorps, light sussex, Rhode Island Reds, leghorns, Silkie, Laced Barnevelder, Wyandotte, bantams, isa browns  and they are just the ones my freiends either curently have or have had before.

One friend finaly made a comment that made perfect sense, what do you want them for pets or eggs and do you want the kids to play with the chickens ?

And the answer was yes to all fo the above yes we wanted chickens as pets, and yes we wanted eggs as there is no point having chickens if they wont give us enough eggs and the kids will want to play with and im sure the dog will to !!!

SO i have asked some freinds what they think is best and am waiting on the answer from a few more but it looks like isa browns or bantoms mabyee i could get some of each :-)

I will keep you posted
